Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Sedation Dentistry (or “sleep dentistry”) is a service we offer to patients who may need a little or a lot of extra help relaxing during procedures.
Nitrous oxide sedation (or “laughing gas”) is a safe method to “take the edge off” during dental work. The effects of nitrous oxide set in quickly, allow you to relax and be comfortable, and wear off almost immediately after the procedure. Nitrous oxide has been used for mild sedation for decades, can be used safely on adults and children, and can make your treatment experience a much more comfortable one.

IV Sedation
IV Sedation can make necessary dental treatment possible for those too young to understand how to cooperate in the dental chair, or for phobic patients who are afraid to complete treatment. Dr. Ulm gladly treats kids over the age of 2 or 3 without sedation if they are able to understand and cooperate with treatment without posing a risk to themselves (sharp instruments in tiny mouths is a tricky proposition!). For those who are unable to cooperate or who are simply too anxious, sedation is often necessary.
Sedation is administered and overseen right here in our office by a board certified anesthesiologist, Dr. David Gutzman. Dr. Gutzman has been in practice for over 28 years as an anesthesiologist, and completed dental school prior to his medical training. This gives him a thorough understanding of the needs of the patient and dentist during treatment. Dr. Gutzman remains in continuous physical contact with a sedated patient, leaving Dr. Ulm available to focus his attention completely on the dental treatment. This partnership reduces the time necessary to keep the patient sedated and results in a safer experience.
